The Banana Splits Movie

In a slightly changed reality the 1960’s Hanna Barbera TV show has never left the air and has been entertaining kids for 50 years.  However the Network has other ideas and cancels the show as the Executive feels its time for a change.

At the same time Banana Splits mega-fan Harley is going to a show taping as a Birthday treat.  However the Splits don’t want to be cancelled and soon take matters into their own hands by systematically killing off all the adults at the television studio.

Basing a gore drenched horror comedy on a beloved psychedelic TV show from the sixties is definitely a brave and bonkers idea.  Warner Bros. have given the film makers a licence to practically wipe the wholesome memory of the characters away and replace them with blood thirsty murderers.  Does it work?  For a majority of the time when the Banana Splits are knocking off the disposable cast members who range from annoying pushy Dads to Instagram would-be influencers, it certainly does.  At times it drags a bit with the token ‘family drama’ thrown in to the plot to give some of the characters motivation but when the killings start it’s a a lot of fun.

Not the greatest movie in the world but at 90 minutes it doesn’t outstay it’s welcome and it will certainly mess up your childhoods with loveable characters being turned into sadistic sinister psychopaths.
