Kickboxer: Retaliation

Kurt Sloane,  if you remember was the character created by Jean-Claude Van Damme in Kickboxer.  That was one of his very first films in where he fought the psychotic Tong Po after his brother was crippled in a martial arts tournament.  Not too long ago, the film was remade with Dave Bautista stepping into the villainous shoes of Tong Po and former stuntman Alain Moussi playing JCVD’s role.  The film was fun and successful so that means a sequel and here it is.

Kurt is taking it easy after defeating Tong Po and is now fighting in MMA.  He’s doing pretty well and after a successful fight he is approached by members of the US Justice Department.  They want to question him about the death of Tong Po but Kurt isn’t convinced they say who they are.  His assumption is correct and the next thing he knows, he is waking up in a prison.  The man who runs the tournament where Kurt defeated Tong Po isn’t happy Kurt bolted after winning along with his girlfriend and demands he fights the new champion played by the fella who is “The Mountain” in Game of Thrones.

What follows is a series of fights, cameos by famous sports figures and more fighting.  JCVD pops back up as Kurt’s mentor and the producers have also got the stunning Sara Malakul Lane back to play Kurt’s ‘other half’.  It’s got a thumping soundtrack with lots of slow motion martial arts moves which almost makes it like a live action version of ‘Streets of Rage’ especially the opening fight.  That sequence channels a bit of Strictly Come Dancing with loads of goons getting their ass kicked, which is certainly original.

Again it’s a modern day ‘Cannon’ film which means it’s high on action and a bit low on brain cells but who cares when Kickboxer: Retaliation is such watchable violent entertainment.  Plus Christopher Lambert is in it and anything with the Highlander is ALWAYS worth watching.
