Criminal Activities

At the funeral of a school friend, four buddies meet up in a bar after the service and discuss what’s been happening in their lives.  The conversation turns to making money and seeing that one of them is a stock broker, they decide to invest in a pharmaceutical company.  Unfortunately the CEO of the company is arresting for dodgy dealings and it turns out that one of the friends had borrowed the ‘investment’money from a known gangster played by John Travolta.

Travolta tells them that in order to wipe the debt they must do some of his dirty work for him and kidnap a known drug dealer from one of his rivals.  It turns out Travolta’s niece has been kidnapped and the only way to get her back is to get hold of the kidnapper’s brother, a nasty foul mouthed individual called Marques.  Of course it doesn’t go to plan, the FBI get involved, other gangsters and at the same time Travolta’s henchmen are combing the city looking for the little girl.

Criminal Activities has some terrific performances from it’s cast, Travolta hams it up as the mobster, Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens plays the wimpy Noah who is one of the hapless kidnappers and the director of the piece Jackie Earle Haley is Gerry the henchman who has his own style of ethics towards the scumbag community.  Topping it all is some cracking dialogue with some very funny lines and some great monologues from Haley.  It’s very well made, violent when it has to be and a killer twist at the end.

Highly recommended.
