I will admit after watching the first season (released here as Metal Hurlant Chronicles) I wasn’t that impressed. It did look very good and there was some great talent involved (Rutger Hauer, Craig Fairbrass and Michelle Ryan) but it all seemed to me a waste of time and effort. In all fairness as much as Kelly Brook is totally stunning, she isn’t the best actress.
For those of you who aren’t aware of this franchise, there is the remains of a planet known as the Metal Hurlant. Each episode of the series features a particular world where the asteroid is currently passing and tells us that story. Variety is the order of the day and there are plenty of different scenarios to get your teeth into. I really did like episode 6 where a ‘dream fixer’ lets rich people have the dreams of their lives, suffice to say all is not what it seems.
The cast like the first season is excellent with amongst others a returning James Marsters, Michael Jai White and Scott Adkins as are the production values again. Based on the cult comic book known as ‘Heavy Metal’ in the America, the first season didn’t float my boat and season 2 was marginally better in my opinion. To the series’ credit there’s always something going on and there are some good fight sequences. Check out YouTube for lots of trailers and clips to see if it’s your cup of tea.
However I can see why lots of people like it and a bloke I know reckons it is genius. I do value his opinion as he is a bit of a sci-fi scholar. With this release you have to be like Bucks Fizz and it’s all about ‘making your mind up’ if you think it’s for you.
