Whiplash

I unfortunately missed this film at the cinema although a couple of friends thought it was terrific and most of the time I trust their judgement, so I was rather looking forward to watching it when the blu-ray popped onto my door mat.

Whiplash tells the story of a young musician Andrew Neiman determined to be the best drummer at his music college.  He is desperate to get into the band ran by Terence Fletcher a reknowned pianist and instructor.  Fletcher’s tactics are harsh as he pushes Andrew to breaking point to make him the best.  In fact you could say Fletcher is a little bit of a sadist in his determination for his students to achieve nothing but perfection.

Andrew puts up with every kind of insult imaginable in his quest to better himself and finally gets his spot in the band.  However with him pursuing his dream, he pushes away his girlfriend away and alienates members of his family.

Thoughly deserving of all it’s BAFTAS and OSCARS, the idea of a film about some drummer might not appeal to everyone.  Trust me this is a really good film with an excellent lead performance from Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons’ intense Fletcher is so scary he would give R. Lee Ermey’s drill instructor a few sleepless nights.

Thoughly recommended.
