A Most Wanted Man

Gunther Bachmann is an old fashioned spy, whose small unit is based in Hamburg to monitor the Islamic community for potential acts of agression.  A young man from Chechnya slips into Germany where he contacts a lawyer for possible asylum.  This man however is a potential jihadist and well known due to what he got up in Russia.  Gunther is determined to find out the threat, if any and find the money men who could be responsible for that threat.

Enter a banker played by Willem Dafoe, whose Father had a shady money laundering past who Gunther approaches him for his help.  With the German authorties breathing down his neck and the Americans taking an interest, Bachmann doesn’t have time on his side.

A Most Wanted Man is a slow burning engrossing thriller which you would expect coming from the mind of John le Carre.  It’s packed with terrific performances especially from Phillip Seymour Hoffman in his final leading role before he passed away and the always awesome Willem Dafore.

It’s a ‘proper’ thriller with the story reverent to today and a real treat, watch it as soon as you can.
